Pink and Green

Inspiration for the new week!

Almost nothing can cheer me up quite like a bouquet of fresh flowers.  It’s a relatively cheap way to perk up your attitude and your home.  I try to grab a fresh bunch during my weekly grocery trip and always feel better the minute I get home and set them on my table.

I usually opt for a cheap $5 bunch of tulips or something else relatively inexpensive, but I couldn’t resist this elaborate bouquet on a recent Friday afternoon outing.  Even though it’s spring, the weather was chilly and I needed something to get me in the Spring fever mindset.  These gorgeous flowers did the trick and unintentionally formed one of my favorite color combos- pink and green!

Fashion Note: I’m wearing a coat by Banana Republic, pants by Gap, booties by Gap and Urban Outfitters sunglasses.

What got me through the week and what I’m looking forward to this weekend!

This was one of those weird weeks that started off on a weird note and subsequently made every day feel extremely long.  I’m certainly thankful for the distractions that helped take my mind off some things this week and for the busy weekend ahead.  I hope you have a great weekend too!

Fried Zucchini Spaghetti

Delicious recipes for the curious cook!

Zucchini Pasta
A little bowl of heaven

Perhaps you’re like me and have not always had a love of vegetables.  I’ve always gravitated to the wonderful world of carbs and dairy, like pasta and cheese, while sometimes forfeiting veggies for a later meal.  As I got older, I started to realize vegetables didn’t have to be eaten the exact same steamed or boiled way I ate them as a kid, and with a little creativity, they can actually taste great.  In fact, I now stick to a mainly veggie based diet, which sometimes leaves the man in my house needing something…more…when it comes to dinner, which is where this recipe comes in.

If you, or anyone in your house, are the type of person who swears they don’t like zucchini, I encourage you to give this recipe a try.  It certainly isn’t the healthiest way to serve a veggie, with fried breadcrumbs and atop a bed of pasta, but it does provide a good way to get in those veggies while satisfying your taste buds.  Go make it now!

Rewind to five years ago and I had no solid workout routine.  In fact, once the days of the after school sports were behind me, I struggled to develop any consistent exercise schedule.  I’d run occasionally, maybe take a group exercise class at a local gym, but there was never anything I felt strongly enough to commit to.  And then I discovered yoga, and not just any yoga, but Bikram yoga.  In a +100 degree room, with classes ranging from 60-90 minutes, it was tough.  But the fact that each class had the same set of postures reassured me.  It helped me anticipate what was coming each and every time I stepped on the mat.  And the consistency didn’t equal monotony; rather, it helped me measure my progress each week and allowed me to go somewhere new in my practice each week.  Not only did the challenge keep me coming back each week (4 years and counting!), it also helped me find a sense of solace.  It helped to clear my mind, cancel out all the distractions and focus only on myself and my practice…while burning 400+ calories an hour.  The benefits affect both physical and mental health and are long lasting even once you’re off the mat.

I’m fortunate enough to have lived in big cities where multiple yoga options are available, but Bikram (and other hot yoga) has become more widespread in the last few years.  If you’re feeling curious, give it a try!
